Gypsum concrete

Gypsum Concrete (Gypcrete) underlayment in Utah

Gypsum concrete levels the floor, adds mass for sound control and helps meet fire-rated assemblies. Knell Construction has poured it across Utah since 1981.

What gypcrete does

Gypsum concrete is a pourable underlayment pumped over wood or concrete subfloors. It flows out flat, so finish flooring goes down on a level surface. It also adds mass to the floor, which cuts sound between units and helps the floor-ceiling assembly meet its 1-hour or 2-hour fire rating.

We install USG Levelrock gypsum underlayments in multifamily units and corridors, senior and student housing, hotels, commercial buildings and custom homes.

Where we use it

  • Wood-frame and podium multifamily buildings
  • Condos, townhomes, senior and student housing
  • Hotels, mixed-use and light commercial
  • Custom homes, including pours over radiant heat tubing
  • Remodels where an uneven floor needs to be leveled

How a gypcrete job runs

  1. Takeoff & bidWe read the assembly details, enlarged unit plans and finish schedules, and price per plan with exclusions and options listed.
  2. SubmittalsProduct data, sound and fire assembly information, and installer qualifications for your architect.
  3. Sound matWhere the assembly calls for it, our crews lay sound mat and perimeter isolation first.
  4. PourGypsum concrete is pumped in and leveled. Most buildings are poured floor by floor or pod by pod to match your schedule.
  5. Dry-out & turnoverWe let you know what the floor needs to dry before flooring, then hand it off to your flooring sub.

Gypcrete FAQ

What is gypcrete?

Gypcrete is a common name for gypsum concrete, a pourable floor underlayment made from gypsum cement, sand and water. It's pumped over wood or concrete subfloors, levels itself, and adds mass that helps with sound control and fire-rated floor assemblies.

Is gypcrete the same as gypsum concrete?

Yes. Gypcrete started as a brand name and is now used for gypsum concrete underlayments in general. We install USG Levelrock gypsum underlayments.

How thick is a gypcrete pour?

Most floors in multifamily and residential work are between 3/4" and 1-1/2". The thickness comes from the floor-ceiling assembly in your drawings, the sound mat under it, and whether the floor needs extra strength or covers radiant heat tubing.

How long does gypcrete take to dry before flooring?

It sets in a few hours and can usually take light foot traffic the same day. Drying before flooring takes longer and depends on thickness, temperature, airflow and humidity. We'll give you a realistic schedule for your project and the moisture requirements for your flooring.

Do I need sound mat under gypcrete?

Most multifamily projects do. Sound mat under the gypcrete is what gets the floor-ceiling assembly to the STC and IIC ratings required between units, especially under hard flooring like LVP and LVT.

What does gypcrete cost per square foot in Utah?

It depends on thickness, the sound mat, square footage, floor layout and access. Send us your plans and we'll price it per plan, with exclusions and any value-engineering options listed separately.

What areas do you serve?

We're based in Salt Lake City and pour across the Wasatch Front, Utah County, Davis and Weber Counties, Park City and Summit County, plus Idaho, Wyoming and Montana.
